The Scott & BR Show

The cast

Scott and BR

Polar opposites. A kicker and a linebacker. The morning show San Diego argued with.

Host

Scott Kaplan

Scott came west because a syndicated CBS morning show — Miami, then New York — had come apart, and because Rick Scott called during Super Bowl week to say XTRA Sports 690 was hiring.

He had already been through Chargers camp in 1993 as a free-agent kicker. John Carney told him the partnership with Billy Ray would work precisely because they were nothing alike. The audition proved it on a Wednesday, with a guitar and a song about a fast car.

Billy Ray was a first-round draft choice of the San Diego Chargers — fifth pick overall — a second-generation NFL defender.

His father, Billy Ray Smith, Sr., was a 13-year pro for the Rams, Steelers and Colts. His mother, Carroll, had a brilliant, albeit brief, stint at nose tackle for the Detroit Lions in the late ’50s.

B.R. played his entire ten-year career in San Diego. He was named Team MVP in 1987, and Team Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986.

He was a member of the Arkansas All-Decade Team and, in 1993, was voted onto the Arkansas All-Century Team. Later he was inducted into the Arkansas State Hall of Fame and the Razorback Hall of Honor. Billy Ray Smith, Jr. was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

If you would like to contact B.R., you don’t have a chance during the football season. In addition to the radio brilliance on the XX, he has run out of candles to burn on both ends: Chargers pre-season analyst, Fox Sports Net’s College Football Saturday analyst, Charger Power Report analyst on XETV Fox 6, Charger Preview host on Channel 4 San Diego, and Special Consultant to Mayor Sanders on stadium issues.

B.R. got his start in broadcasting as a local sports reporter and anchor in the mid-1990s. He was the color commentator for the UCLA Bruins on the Bruins radio network for four seasons, 1997 through 2000.

Smith and his wife, KUSI news anchor Kimberly Hunt, have a daughter, Savannah.
