Great Friends Update 8/1/09

We have a lot to talk about.

We claimed two horses on Friday, and Digestivo will run this Wednesday.

Let's start with the claims. In yesterday's second race we claimed the 5/2 favorite Oceanor, who was trained by James Cassidy.  He is a three-year-old Cal-bred and yesterday's race was only his second ever.  The race was a $40,000 Maiden Claiming race. Unfortunately, Oceanor did not run well. He and jockey Garrett Gomez simply did not get along - they fought each other in the post parade, in the race and after the race. Doug O'Neill will take over for us, and we are confident he can get him straightened out (likely with a different jockey). Even though he didn't run well yesterday, we think this youngster has potential.

In the 9th race on Friday we claimed a 15-1 longshot named Self Insured out of a $25,000 claiming race.  He ran great and won the race.  However, the stewards disqualified him and placed him second for interference down the stretch (pretty iffy decision).  Self Insured is a five-year-old Kentucky-bred, and he will be trained by John Sadler.  We are very happy with the claim and expect him to improve under Sadler's care.

Digestivo finally got in a race!  She will run this Wednesday in the second race - post time will be approximately 2:30pm.  It is a $16,000 claiming race for three-year-old fillies going one mile on the Polytrack.  We expect her to win.

Still waiting on a race for Joe Carl.  It could happen anytime - maybe even as early as next Thursday.

Hope to see you all in the paddock.

  • Implications of Brady's reported new deal
NBC Sports' Peter King reported on Thursday night's opener between the Saints and Vikings that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was finalizing a deal with starting QB Tom Brady. An NFL source with direct knowledge of the contract told FOXSports.com the long-awaited four-year deal is worth an average of $18 million per year, and could pave the way for two other franchise quarterbacks, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, to get new mega dollar deals.
